Manual Transmission Service

Also commonly known as ‘stick shift’ or ‘standard transmission’, manual transmissions offer performance, reliability, and an exhilarating driving experience that simply can’t be matched with automatics.

Be it for performance, durability, or simply a fondness for the classics, many of us still prefer manual transmissions to get us from A-to-B.

Despite its many benefits and notable durability, even the best performing transmission and parts can wear down. This will cause issues over time, requiring repair work or an entire rebuild.

At Texas Drivetrain Performance we specialize in helping you get more from your ride, with performance transmissions engineered to outpace and outperform the competition.

Using the highest-grade parts, installed by our talented team of automotive veterans, our manual transmission services deliver where it matters most: on the road.

DIY'ers? Need parts for your builds?

Where to begin

First of all, here are a few steps to follow that will save you time and money.

  1. Verify that you do, in fact, have a transmission problem. See below or feel free to call/email us with any questions.
  2. Decide which one of the following four routes best suits you
  3. If you are having us do the rebuild, then we’ll proceed through these steps
    • Disassemble the unit within a few days
    • Make contact to go over our findings and recommendations
    • Quote the exact cost to build and/or upgrade
    • Once approved, the unit will be reassembled
    • Payment is due on pickup. Or, if you’re out-of-state then payment is due once the unit is assembled and ready to ship.

Having an understanding of when to hire a qualified transmission specialist can save you time, money, and frustration. Putting off some issues can lead to further damage, costing you big later on.

Indicators that it’s time to give some attention to your manual transmission

  • Audible grinding noises while upshifting and/or downshifting
  • Difficulty shifting or won’t go into particular gears
  • Stuck in gear
  • Excessive noise
  • Clutch replacement. It’s a great time to go into your gearbox. A failing clutch can cause internal damage.

At the first sign of an issue, your best bet is to address the issue immediately. Catching transmission problems early on can help you avoid costly damage.

There is never a “cheap” or “easy” fix. For example, a grinding gear usually means the engagement teeth are damaged. This means it will need a new synchro sleeve as well. When this is happening to one gear, then it’s a sure bet that other gears are following closely behind. The best approach is to replace all wear items along with any non-wear items that had received damage. That way, the transmission is better than new when done.

Manual Transmission Rebuild

Rebuilding a transmission is a great way to extend the life of your vehicle while saving you money on a complete replacement. It can be done quickly and efficiently, getting you back on the road in a timely manner. In nearly all cases, it’s well worth it.

A rebuild entails thorough cleaning and expert inspection of all parts. Everything is assessed for wear or damage and replaced accordingly while assembling the transmission.

Transmission rebuilds may include replacement of:

  • Gear(s)
  • Input shaft
  • Output shaft
  • Synchronizer sleeve(s)

It is not uncommon for some issues to be related to the clutch or flywheel which may also require repair or replacement.
